I make these types of instruments with understanding the principles of carving for the maximum sound, intonation and responsiveness. Each set of spruce or maple must be carved to certain thickness and tap tuned. Some areas of the treble and base side of the instrument are 2mm to 4.5 mm and they actually produce a tone and flexibility that moves the air inside box and project beautiful sound. When the thickness is done properly all the energy moves from the sides and stays on the top and back. This is the differents betwen good and great sounding guitar.
Beauty, figure and flame of the wood are not all that important such as carving the plates for volume. Sure, the wood has to be dried seasoned and the spruce should have tight grain before you make this quality instrument.
Thinning the treble-base side of the instruments accordingly creates fast projection with great balance and worm sound Cello style for my Archtop Guitars and Violin style for my Mandolins.
I learned from master luthier’s in the USA and Europe, some of them were friends and some of them I meat at the Guitar Shows.
The maximum sound for Archtop Guitar is at 3? body depth.
-Understanding is everythink.
